Re: lower unit gear oil question

What engine is this in reference too? for my 2000 Tohatsu 9.8 2 stroke i use SAE #80 or #90. No is should not foam when hot.

here you can find all the owners manuels for all tohatsu/ nissans on line for free and they will tell you the correct process and weight of oil. http://www.tohatsu.com/tech_info/manuals.html

Re: lower unit gear oil question

well its for the transmission in my toyota tacoma actually,,,it takes the same weight gear oil, but my main drive bearing maybe going bad causing the gear oil to foam up and come out of my vent holes a little at the top of my shifter, a friend of mine at the toyota shop told me he put lower unit gear oil in his and it solved the problem.. thats why i'm asking..so its not for an outboard at all..

If he recommended using lower unit gear oil, go to your local Walmart and buy quicksilver lower unit gear oil, and you should be good too go, I would buy the premium kind if given a choice at your store.

Most cars and most outboards, use the same gear oil. Marine labeled products usually have a non foaming agent.
