I have my lower unit off to rplace impeller and was thinking about flushing out and refilling while it is off. would diesel fuel be good to flush it out with?

You can, just make sure that you get all the diesel fuel flushed out.
Normally there is no need to actually flush the lower unit unless it is really contaminated, just let it drain for awhile and refill it from the bottom.

Thanks Daviet, just wanted to clean it up and see if there was any metal in there. I was worried because of slack between prop and driveshaft. No big hunks found just some fine stuff like what you might find in a car transmission.

boobie the oil looked better than I thought it would. Not milky, some black and a little brownish, had filled it up awhile back, but just wanted to make sure it was in good condition. Only 50 year old engine but younger than me! Thanks for your reply.
