I have a Nissan 18hp 4 stroke with a short shaft and possibly wanting to extend it to a long shaft , can this be done ? If so so what are your thoughts ? Would it be durable ? Worth the money ? Where to find it ?

Re: Lower unit extension

It's expensive unless you can find someone with a 20" version that wants to swap lower units with you. pretty sure the lower unit needs to be disassembled and the driveshaft replaced, then you also need a longer housing, and some other parts. Paul or Elvin could probably tell you what parts you'd need and the cost, but I'm pretty sure you're better off just selling what you have and finding another outboard unless you can find someone to swap the necessary parts with.

The parts alone are around $450.00. About three hours labor if you know what you are doing. Around 6 hours labor if you think you can do it:) It's not generally worth it. But, If you can find a junk 9.9, 15 or 18 you could just swap power heads and be golden.

Re: Lower unit extension

It won't interchange with a Honda 7.5 anyway...

Best deal is to either find a donor motor (as Elvin suggested) or find someone who has a Long and needs a Short to swap with.
