Here is another question.
I have a possibility to buy a 1964 850 mercury lower unit for my 1967 950 mercury.
Do you good people know whether the lower units can be interchanged and is the gear ratio compatible?
Thank you for your answers and opinions.

I checked in me oldest (non Merc and General, [Glenn's]) manual: Rolmops and I could not tell fer sure. The 76 cubic inch inline 6 LU may (and likely would IMHO) bolt up to yer 90 cubic inch motor. I have two 1000(s) which are real similar to yers. Most of the "black" (non direct reverse) inline 6(s) had 2:1 gears, some of the early 1970 models had 1.78:1 and some of the inline 4(s) had 2.3:1. Most black inlines LUs bolted right up without problem and props are available to get the RPMs @ WOT right. I would recomend not purchasin' something that old sight unseen anyway and if ya can take yer old unit with ya it would be real easy to tell cornpatability.

If ya google OLDMERCS, there is a great site where ya may be able to figure out a serial number n' go to other sites or even that one with schematics or gaskits ta tell fer sure. IT LIKELY FITS n' has 2:1 like yers does. Good luck, JR
