Is it necessary to remove the lower unit to replace the clutch dog? I was hoping that since it's before the forward gear I could access everything through the prop outdrive. I'm suspecting the clutch dog is worn because it's requiring more travel to engage forward or reverse. Right now it appears I can adjust my cabling to have only foward or reverse. It looks to be a difficult task, but I'm hoping to make it easier if I don't have to remove the lower unit.

Yes, you will have to dismantle the lower unit to get to the clutch dog. What motor are we talking about? It could be as simple as a linkage adjustment. Most times a clutch dog will make the lower unit pop out of gear and you will know it when it happens...
