Lower unit clicking when prop is spun by hand

I have a 1989 225 Yamaha V6 excel, the motor is running great, but yesterday, after a long high speed run (the bay really laid down) I noticed a slight clicking noise, when I spun the prop by hand. The motor shifts fine and runs great, just had the powerhead serviced. Is this a potential problem? Is this normal? Any help would be great.
thanks

Was it in neutral or in gear when you spun it bay hand. A lot of them will click when in gear if you spin the prop the same direction. In other words, if you are in forward you can spin the prop forward and it might click but if you turn the prop the other way it will hook up and not turn.

Re: Lower unit clicking when prop is spun by hand

Being that Mercury and Yamaha have/had a close relationship, I'm betting the Yammie has the same ratcheting clutch arrangement that Mercury uses. I'll bet it only does it in forward gear and only does it in one direction. The clutch dog faces are ramped so that the propeller will spin upon rapid decelleration - a leftover from the days when prop drag motors would tilt out of the water if you slowed down rapidly...
- Scott

Re: Lower unit clicking when prop is spun by hand

Thanks for the quick response. The motor is in neutral only, with the ignition off, of course. It is very slight, but I do not ever remember feeling it before. Also when I pull on the prop it moves back and forth(in and out) slightly. Again this may be normal, I just don't know. Lastly the prop nut is only hand tight with the cotter pin keeping the nut from moving, is this too loose? The motor is running great, I just want to keep it that way!
Thanks again

There should be no clicking in neutral. Might simply have the shift cable out of adjustment a hair. Try disconnecting the shift cable and shifting by hand at the motor - see if the click can be made to go away... If so, adjust accordingly...
- Scott

I would check a manual, I think the prop nut needs a little touque on it for the thrust washer. This may be why it is clicking. >>>??

The shifter was off by a hair, moved the shifter and the problem went away.

Gary, I'll check the torque specs thanks.
