The lower unit on my 135 mercury is pretty much stuck in the casing, In the process of removing the insides the casing took a beating. I bought the same casing off ebay but there is a 1/4 inch chip taken out of the threaded area of the caing opening If i cut all the gears and stuff out off my old unit will this chip in the new casing give me a problem. Thanks

Re: lower unit casing

sidewinder16
There is a few things to look at here. First if you are going to change the casing you have to reshim the unit. To reshim the unit you have to have special merc. tools most shops won't let you borrow them they are very expensive. Second is the crack go into the threads of the casing if so it will not work properly. Then if it is able to be interchanged then you want to inspect all of your gears at that time and replace what needs to be done.. Then when all of that is done you should reseal it and have a new water pump in it.

So it isn't all of that easy. and good luck!
Nick

I guess you are talking about where the big nut screws into the prop shaft opening. If so, i would say dont use it. There's a lot of force there, it holds your prop straight!
