lower unit casing still frozen together, what to do

I have a 1970 1.5 horse evinrude and I canot get the flange behind the prop off. can I use heat to break it free.<br /><br />thanks<br /><br />Joe

You can try that. But make sure you have all new seals for the foot because you will fry the old ones. I have done this before and it worked. Just don't heat it too much.

i just had to drill mine out of a mariner, it was well frozen in. heat would not shift it. all the threads were shot and all because the previous owner painted the sacrificial anode! after drilling it close to the casing wall i then chisled it through so that i could collapse it inwards. it has now been welded back together and is now secured by 4 self tapping screws. hey, it works. just make sure that you set it at the right diameter for "interference fit" before welding. then tap it home using a drift of the same diameter. carefully drill four holes and secure it using 4 stainless steel self tappers. this is a last resort but be brave if you need it. use a nice sharp drill bit and keep checking so that you don't cut into the casing or the bearing carrier underneath. hope this helps.
