Where on the lower unit should i apply heat to loosen bearing carrier? Do i heat the LU case on the outside or apply the heat inside on the carrier itself? Thanks

Heat will damage the seals. It should come out with a puller.

.....And the paint. Course if you are going to replace them anyway, which I would think is what you do when you are that far into a teardown, who cares. Agree with the puller, however.

If you are determined to use heat, then I would apply it outside as that would help the shell to expand, whereas applying to the core would just make it fit tighter. Course you have to get on it and get off as the heat will migrate through the shell in no time anyway.

My 2c.

Re: Lower unit carrier removal with heat

Here is what I do when I have to use a "red wrench".. Install unit in a holder or vise with prop shaft pointing straight up, pour some 30W oil in carrier just enough so it will just cover end of carrier. Apply heat to lower carrier(where o-ring and reverse bearing are) and let expand and boil, oil will weep into opening caused by heat, to hot and oil will ignite:eek: Apply heat to top of carrier where nut goes,do this several hot/cool cycles. Install puller and try removing now, if still tight apply heat to the mentioned areas. I have only had 4 or 5 I couldnt get out. Here is link to remove it with your prop as a puller, just skip steps 4 & 5 as your is a outboard:D

never had one I could not pull. here in the salt pond heat is a mainstay.
I usually drill and cut the spanner nuts as in the salt pond if you attempt to unthread them the gearcase threads tend to get damaged.
once the spanner nut is cut out the puller of choice is one made by precision, myself I use that one or the puller legs for the OMC v4 and v6 cases.
works way better than the merc tool.
DO NOT pull on the aft carrier lip.
