Well $h!t.
Took my boat/outboard in to get the oil seals replaced in the gearcase because my gearcase oil was off colored so I figured it was water intrusion. No such luck. The seals are still good but they discovered that the pinion and forward gear were all chewed up (likely from an impact before I bought it last year) and the discoloration of the oil was from all the metal shavings. Repair shop will only use OMC parts because they have to warranty the work and they say aftermarket gears don't last as long.
They're quoting me $1400 for parts and $800 labor to rebuild it. These guys have a good reputation and have always treated me well so I dont think they're ripping me off. I'm just wondering if there are any other options you guys can think of.
I have a little bit of mechanical knowledge but not enough to take on a job like this so.
Outboard is a '94 60HP Johnson.
