Well $h!t.

Took my boat/outboard in to get the oil seals replaced in the gearcase because my gearcase oil was off colored so I figured it was water intrusion. No such luck. The seals are still good but they discovered that the pinion and forward gear were all chewed up (likely from an impact before I bought it last year) and the discoloration of the oil was from all the metal shavings. Repair shop will only use OMC parts because they have to warranty the work and they say aftermarket gears don't last as long.

They're quoting me $1400 for parts and $800 labor to rebuild it. These guys have a good reputation and have always treated me well so I dont think they're ripping me off. I'm just wondering if there are any other options you guys can think of.

I have a little bit of mechanical knowledge but not enough to take on a job like this so.

Outboard is a '94 60HP Johnson.

You could look for a used one probably be cheaper than that. Anything 89 and up will fit. I can buy a refurbished one around me for about $1200 with a warranty.

Is there a range of HP that will fit or does it have to be another 60HP?

If your motor is a 3 cylinder 2strk the 50/60/70 hp 3 cylinder lowers will fit.

Great, thank you! I found one locally for $900 that I'm going to jump on.

See if SEI makes one. That one would be brand new and likely cost less than $1000.

I dont believe SEI makes a lower unit for the 3 ctlinder OMC motors. When I Replaced mine they only showed V4 and V6 Lowers.
