engine starts fine wouldn't go into any gear.
checked all the easy stuff. Took off the lower unit that was fun. took off the screws and cap for the lower unit . found the lower grommet on the lowest screw on the cap had worked its way into past the cap and was dissolving. There was a small leak coming from this screw hole and small particles in the oil. In the manual it says particles could mean a problem with the gears and a rebuild would be in order. But It may be that this grommet was disolving and the particles were of the rubber kind. I don't have any left to make a judgement. In the manual it states that if fluid levels are not maintained then shifting can be a problem. I could replace the gromets and see if the oil will stay in the lower end and make shifting allowable. I know I need to check the controls as well with ameter. Can I flush oil into the lower end to check for particles. When I emtied the old oil from the lower end ther was no small particles in it other than at the lower screw on the cap. Should I fill the lower unit with the gear oil and see ifmetal is in the lowe r unit

Small particles (fuzz) is ok..Chunks are not. I would refill (this unit takes special lube) and replace the gasket you are talking about. Run for a few hours and recheck gear lube for water/level.

When you drained the oil, was it clear or watermixed ? ( like coffee with cream )
If you had water in gearoil, for some time, you might have to disassemble and loosen the clutch dog. Specially if the motor has been out of use for some time.

Is the shift stuck now or can you move if you try manually. I think you can get to the shifting rod in the top ?

The shaft can not turn it is attached to the lower unit now and it has been pulled out of the engine. The lower unit prop shaft turns easily
