I removed the lower unit to check the water impeller and when replassembling the LU to the motor it I somehow got the shifting out of whack I lowered the LU put it in neutral and put the shifter in neutral and put it back on. this all sounds logical to me but wanted to check with experts. problem was caused by misunderstanding the description of how to tell which lower unit I had.

Well, does it shift OK now? If so, you got it back together alright.

Doesn't matter if it was put back on in Neutral or Fwd gear as long as the shifter was in the correct position and you turned the shift shaft to the correct position before you installed the lower unit.

It's sometimes easier for the layman to install in Neutral, since it's defined position. Whereas Fwd gear the shift shaft can be moved around a bunch and the lower unit's still in forward (even though the shift shaft might not be in the correct position to shift properly).

Just for the record, on these Inline Merc's the correct position for the shift shaft to be in, if you're installing the lower unit when in forward gear, is lightly rotated CCW until it stops. If you rotated it any more CCW beyond that, it'll shift into Neutral.

This position is the ONLY one which will result in correct shifting if you reinstall the lower unit while in forward gear.

I prefer to install with the lower unit in fwd gear, since you can spin the prop just a bit while shoving the lower unit upwards, in order to line up the driveshaft with the crankshaft splines. Otherwise, in neutral you've got to try and turn the flywheel while pushing upwards on the lower unit. My arms aren't that long!!!

Heck, you could even install the lower unit when shifted info reverse, but that's just too Darn Hard!!!!

HTH.............ed
