Ok I have a 1997 four winns horizon rx boat I just purchased and the lower trim button doesn't work on the throttle. The raise and lower trim on the engine does and the raise trim on the throttle does but not the lower trim button. How can I fix this or determine the reason?

Welcome aboard.

It would help us to know what remote control and motor you have.

Lacking that, all that can be assumed is the down wire from the switch is broken or the switch is bad.

Since it goes down on the engine, it is either a bad switch or bad connection which is good news. Get out your multi meter and troubleshoot both ends of the plug. In my case, I had a similar issue where the throttle switch would go up but not down and the transom switch worked both ways. It ended up being corrosion from me detailing the engine bay and being overly generous whereby the plug that connects to the pump from the throttle switch got some corrosion in it because it wasn't watertight like it is supposed to be from someone at some point loosening the hose clamp that keep water out of the plug. That is where I would start.

It's a side mount throttle. The motor is a 130hp evinrude. I will add that the rubber cover over the button part in the trim is torn off. This could be a reason it's not working I'm sure. Lol

How do I go about fixing the switch? Or how to check the connection. I tried to take the handle off but couldn't get it off.

Since I can't see your set up, I would start back at the plug in that connects to the pump from the throttle switch with your multimeter and check for continuity.
If you can easily access behind the throttle set up then I would start there. Some boats are heavily upholstered with no obvious access and you can't easily get behind the throttle to test without taking stuff apart first.
