I had a question about the lower shift cable. I had bought a lower shift cable for a 1986 Tiara with the 5.7. I ended up not needing to change it but kept the cable. Now I have a 1979 chris craft scorpion 260 with the Twin merc 5.7s. One of the lower shift cables is bad. Will the shift cable for the 86 work on the 79? I bieve its an MC-1 outdrive. Thanks in advance.

It should ,most have been changed to aft entry, if by chance you have the front entry now, remove it and update to the new type

I just looked at it, its front entry. Can I just tap this to the size of the new cable? How do you get the front entry off? Thanks for your response, I really appreciate it.

Never done it, but word on the street is that the tap has to be a straight tap, not a typical NPT.

If front entry, cut the cable and use a socket to unscrew the remains. Get a straight tap 1/4 /x 18 NPST Granger carries them.run the tap from the front out the rear to keep the threads. Should you destroy the threads removing the old cable and you cannot retap the housing I have a fix I developed. No, you can

Yea, I figured I'd just cut the cable, unscrew it and then tap it. I ordered tap 91-95639, is this correct? Thanks for the responses guys, it helps a ton.

that is correct ,start it at the front where the threads are and work to the back till it comes thru. When installing the new cable you CANNOT have more that 2 threads left visible , the nut wil be almost flush with the housing

So, if I get it completely flush I'm okay? I just got the old one out, it wasn't to bad. Now I'm just waiting on the tap. Thanks for the info, its not near as scary as I thought it would be.

I got turned on to Brave by a Freeper. Works really well on sites with a lot of ads. It will clean up the whole thing. Excellent browser. Been using it now for a couple months. Been going back and forth to find and copy over some of the bookmarks and passwords. But easy to use. Enjoy.

Sorry to kidnap your thread Dan.
