Hi everyone,

I'm going to purchase a service manual, but I'm wondering how difficult it is to change the lower end seals on a 1974 Merc 1150. What kind of tools will I need to make for this? Some sort of a puller? Any tricks, or problems with this year, or is it pretty straight forward?

Thanks for your time.

Goldeneyes, the seals in the LU are: Propshaft, Driveshaft, waterpump base and shiftshaft. The propshaft is the hardest and requires special tools. the shiftshaft is next hardest, but no special tools. Luckily these two have never failed for me. The driveshaft and waterpump base fail occasionally, but are easy to replace. I suggest you concentrate on them, and if the LU still leaks, then work on the other two.

I did the water pump seals (3), water pump, and shift shaft bushing on my '65 Mark 1000. See the thread here: http://forums.iboats.com/bbBoard.cgi?a=viewthread;fid=29;gtid=934172. The toughest one was the shift shaft bushing because I had to make a tool to get it off and man was it ever on there. Mine is many years older than yours, but the procedure is esentially the same. Just dont forget the bolt under the trim tab to get the lower unit off!

OK I have a question... I removed the prop, and spacers and now there is a large ring that is screwed in with notches on it that looks to hold in the shaft that's the best way I can think of describing it.) I tried using a long ratchet that fit perfectly and tapping it with a hammer to get it unscrewed but to no avail. Is there some special merc tool that I can get teh tool and die guys to copy on this?? :D

goldeneyes your moving on to where I was a week ago . that collar ring is the spanner nut behind it is a locking tab washer. it is normal to not be able to spin that thing off.I removed mine by using a dremmel splitting that collar off . i got mine apart the whole lower end . using no really special tools except a slide hammer and some drift stocks i use to press bearings off cars . but i got to say once you get in there it is not as easy as just changing that seal .some of those parts to put it back together are hard to track down . took me a while some are here but alot of suff is apart . @ 350 in parts following the seloc manual. that ring to replace it is 18-3750 sierra part number . the lock washer is 18-2299.and i chased the threads down and cleaned them up so the new one will screw back on . dong that now ..

the tool will allow extra torque and great if it gets it off you can then reuse the part

Ok, but you mentioned a tab washer behind it? Does this hold the spanner nut on, or something else behind it?

the spanner nut lock washer has filp up tabs on it stopping you from removing the collar it is the only thing stopping the spin off . of the part
