Lower oil filling question

New boat owner - heard I should replace the lower unit oil. Then one guys says, "Be sure to fill it from the bottom until it runs out the top screw." Seriously? Do I unscrew both top and bottom, but fill it from the bottom hole and just fill it up to the top screw, or what? So, why are they selling the oil in a bottle with a long spout on it? What's up with that?
Thanks -
Flyin' Fish 73

The gear lube comes in a squeezable tube that in fact does have a long snout on it. If you need to change tubes when filling, be sure to insert the top screw to create a air pocket before removing the present tube.

You can buy a pump for the lower unit for under 10 bucks. Screws onto a standard quart oil container. A lot easier to use than trying to use the bottles with the long neck

The only way to fill quickly AND reliably is from the bottom ... it take only seconds with a pump AND you can be certain you have filled it properly.

Make sure that you replace the gaskets on both the drain & fill screwa.

Hello
all the advice is good advice. just remember muphy's law. if you use the squeeze tube you will drop the vent plug and it will roll uphill through the sand just out of your reach. buy a pump and keep it in a zip loc and life will be good :) :)
good luck and dont tempt Murphy :)

Re: Lower oil filling question

Thanks for the help. I'm off to buy the pump and then on to the lake. Hopefully I won't need more than one quart of oil for the unit.

Flyin' Fish
