Lower gearcase removal

Hi guys, I'm trying to change my water pump in my 2001, j90.

I pulled the pin in the shift linkage and slid the linkage toward the powerhead like the directions say. The linkage only slides about 1/4 inch before it hits the Carb. Anyway, I removed all the bolts but the lower won't drop out. It comes out about 3/4" and stops. I'm doing this in neutral. I'm sure its the shift rod holding me up since when trying to wiggle the controls at the helm, it moves the lower unit as well.

So is there a trick, or some technique I'm missing to get my lower off???

thanks.

Any insight on this? I was hoping to swap out the water pump today, but I'm at a standstill.

The linkage will slide sideways plenty enough to release the shift rod. Use a large screwdriver to gently move the linkage side to side, until the shift rod is clear by at least 1/8". Sometimes the linkage can hang up where the shift cable attaches, on the lower starboard side of the motor.
