I have a 84 35hp twin cylinder outboard that I am trying to pull the lower end on to change the water pump. I removed all 4 bolts including the bold under the trim tab and can get the lower unit to drop down about 2 inches but it seems to stop there and wont come out any further. I cant seem to see what else might be holding it in.... am I missing something? after playing with it for a bit I pushed it back up fully into the motor and figured I would ask before I broke something important.

Thanks!

There's a shift shaft linkage to be undone, somewhere...

What's the unit serial number?
Is there a screw in the top of the shift control rod that can be taken off allowing the rod to drop down through the exhaust housing? The pictures I have are not very clear....

I will give a look for those items you mentioned tomorrow... hopefully its something simple? I was thinking this was one of the models where the linkage did not have to be disconnected. Someone had mentioned to me the gear selector rotated side to side vs moving up and down. I will have to look for the serial number tomorrow during the day light but I was able to confirm it was a 84 last year.

Thanks!

Yup. That's what I think I see, too. A serial may help us with another drawing...

Shift linkage rotates; splined shaft. I don't see any restrictions. My apologies.

Sounds like maybe I just need to give it a good pull... wanted to verify there was no linkage or anything. Thanks for all the help! I will give it another go when I get home today.

Re: Lower End Removal 84 35hp Cant get fully seperated

Well I got it out and installed the new impeller! Few questions

1: After installing the new impeller with the fins bent in the correct direction... how do you keep them from bending the other way when the crank shaft turns? They have very short blades on them... I noticed they flipped back once when I turned the crank with the pump housing on.

2: The water pump tube came out with the lower end... can I pull it out of the pump and install it in the power head before I Try to put the lower end back on? Seems in the past this is a part that has usually remained in the power head on other outboards.

3: The exhaust tube also seems to be loose in the drive shaft housing and moves up and down. any advice on getting it back in the power head / into the seal on the lower end?

The parts in question are numbers 11 and 12 on the diagram in the link below

Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. - DRIVE SHAFT HOUSING - 35 H.P.

Thanks!
