I know some will say use only orignal equipment lubricants and some will testify that after market lubricants are just fine. I was wondering about switching to a synthetic lower end lube for my 50hp yamaha 2 stroke. When i winterized the unit last year i noticed that the lower end lube that i bought was a different color than the lube i drained out. The new stuff was blue in color and had about the same consistency as 2 stroke oil. The oil i drained out was golden and more like regular gear oil. After reading the bottle again i realized that the new oil is synthetic. Will this be okay for my 2002 lower unit? The product claims to be approved for yamaha and is nmma approved. Thanks for the input in advance and pass the pop corn LOL.

Re: Lower end lube

I use Mercury/Quicksilver oil in my Merc lower unit and it is blue/green/blackish. Says not as to the contents......why not? Pennzoil LU lube on the other hand is honey colored and claims to be semi-synthetic. Both are listed as premium and applications listed.

On using syn or not, guess where the 5 year/100,000 mile power train warranty comes from in today's light trucks? Where does the 100,000 mile drain interval come from for auto trannys? Why is there no mention of paying any attention to the differential on today's LTs? On and on.....check out the specs for the lube they now specify and you will see that all are either syn or semi-syn.

Do you use syn blend oil in your gas? I do and smoking is almost non-existent.

I just bought a Generac brand standby generator for the house. They recommend syn oil for the most severe operating conditions.

Last, all containers of blend or full syn state that they are compatible with dyno oils.

Am I sold? Naw. Grin

Any idea if your motor calls for a synthetic gear oil? If so, use one. If not use any marine gear oil.

+ 1... I switched over to this, I was told that even if water gets in it wont mix and it still lubes.
