Hi all...new to boating and have a maintenance question. I have a 2002 Yamaha 115 4 stroke on a 17.5 CC Edgewater.

I recently replaced the foot oil and noticed that the vent/drain plugs had gaskets made from an unknown material (similar to regular gasket material). The "boat store" sold me rubber o rings as a replacement. Should I have any concerns using these rubber o rings? or should I try to find the gaskets made from the other material? or reuse the old gaskets?

This probably sounds like a silly question, but as I said I am new to boating and don't want to be too careful. Also how tight should these plugs be?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Re: lower end drain/vent plug gaskets

hello
the original orange yamaha gaskets may be reused several times as long as they are not distorted. dont subsitute the gaskets. if ya need some boogie on down to the yamaha place. you can also use the merc 225 4stroke v6 gaskets. yammi drain and fill gaskets were the same for the 2-300 hp models for at least the past 20 years or so.
hope this helps good luck and keep posting]

Yes, it helps... I went back to the shop and got the "right" gaskets. thanks for the advice.

Wonder what would have happened if I had used the O rings?
