lower drive mercruiser repair

I can buy a cavitation plate for less than 15.00 TIG weld it on and grind weld and paint. When Im done you cant tell it. Labor and all would run someone about 150.00. Most propeller repair shops will do this repair also.

Why would someone spend $3200 on a new drive and sell the old for $300?

2 guesses from me:<br /><br />1) there is something internally wrong with that drive, and they didn't want to rebuild it.<br /><br />2) "Someone" didn't spend $3200, they got their insurance company to pay for one, and they kept that one.

wow there is a place near me that has complete NEW Alpha drives for 1495.00

notice what looks like holes in the plate. is that damage maybe from someone stepping on one of those hydrofoils that was bolted on?
