1981 evinrude 25 hp. There is a small o ring listed on the parts diagram. Looks like you fit it around the crank and slide it up into the seal retainer (the retainer being the triangular piece with 3 BOLTS that fits to the bottom of the crank. Anyone know how far to push that o ring up the crank snout? Should it go up in the recess of the seal retainer all the way up to the lower crank seal? Thanks

Unless I am sadly mistaken, that goes in a groove inside the end of the crankshaft to keep water out of the splines

Is the groove you are talking about on the inside diameter of the crank end (where the female SPLINES are? I have no groove. And the o ring is too big to fit in there. On the other hand I have to stretch the o ring a pretty good amount to get it around the crank snout. Confused.

It DOES NOT fit / belong around the crankshaft snout.----Is there a groove at the end of the driveshaft, yes or no.----Just took the o-ring out of a similar crankshaft.-----OD is 3/4" and it fits in the very end of the crankshaft before the splines !

At some point in history, the o-ring was changed from going in a groove around the O.D. of the drive shaft to going in a groove in the I.D. of the crankshaft. Not sure which applies in your case.

The o-ring I took out was 3/4" OD.----What diameter is the one you have.--------There is a spot just at the very bottom of the crank.----O-ring fit in there very nicely.-----Any picture of the bottom of the crank ?----Model # of your motor ?-----Have you removed the o-ring from the bottom of your crankshaft, yes or no ?

Ok I see it now. Yes groove inside the crank. Fits fine in there. It seems like it's too big when you look at where it's supposed to go which confused me. Thanks guys
