lower cowl gasket for 25xd question

Guys,
Reworking my old '84 25hp and am having trouble replacing the gasket that goes in the groove of the lower cowl side pannels and fits around the midsection. This gasket is not shown in any parts diagrams that I've seen and therefore no part number. I'm thinking of making my own "gasket" out of some kind of rubber material I'll find in the hardware store. Does anyone have any experience with this problem and therefore have a solution that they found that I may use?
Thanks,

If it's the lower cowel that splits around the plate, I don't think it's a Merc specific gasket. Looks to me like a regular old U-shaped weather strip. I think the hardware store is a great option. Just bring what you have with you so you can match it up.

That gasket is only sold with the adapter plate as a assy.
