"Lowe Line" transom rot?

My 1977 Lowe line 16 foot seems to have a rotten transom. It squishes a lot when I tighten down the clamps of my 33hp Evinrude but loosens up after a single use. I put some 18 gauge aluminum plate on it to spread the load of the clamps but the wood itself seems spongy. The wood is trapped inside a welded framework and I was wondering if this needs to be cut out and replaced on a regular basis. As heavy as that 33 is, I am worried about the transom moving around a lot. What kind of wood is used in transoms, anyway?
Any thoughts?

hi sargentmac....

welcome to i boats.....

yes the boat does need to be repaired....you are on the verge of being unsafe.

there are many ways to fix that ......many materials you can buy......the best thing is to read the boat building/restoration forum....

but a very short answer is exterior grade plywood with a layer of fiberglass wrapped around it and between it.

cheers

exterior plywood, glued together, 3 coats of oil based paint, will last another 30 years.
