First off I'd like to say I'm new to the forum as a member but have been lurking for a while now.

Info: 1990 sea ray 170 bow cruiser 4.3, alpha one, 21 pitch stiletto stainless prop with a monster tower aluminum wake tower. New plugs (champion), wires, dizzy cap, rotor button (all quicksilver, correct for my engine). Both fuel filters have been replaced and new fuel lines from the tank to the pump (mechanical). Previous owner claims carb is on second season of rebuild. (Who knows really but boat runs/revs really well)

At WOT my boat will only turn about 3000-3200 rpm. The tach cover is broken and moves so that's why I'm unsure of exact rpm but that's close. Gps and factory speedo shows speed at about 33-34 mph with about 400 lbs (not counting the tower which I assume doesn't weigh much) of weight in boat and is slow to plane out. The prop is a 3 blade stiletto 21 pitch stainless prop. Not entirely sure of the diameter but I can go measure it if I need to. I would assume somewhere around 14". I have done quite about of reading on this forum and others and have determined my top speed or WOT RPM should not be this low with this setup. Can anyone steer me in the right direction to get this boat back right? I don't particularly want to go fast, but I would like to yank skiers and boarders up out of the water faster. I know stepping down to a 18 or 19 pitch prop would help there but I think there is also another problem here besides the prop that's causing the rpms to be so low.

Howdy

First I think your over propped but need your drive ratio to determine slip. Also need correct rpm, so need a hand held tach or something which can provide info

How can I find out the drive ratio? I assume it would be the stock ratio and most everything driveline related is stock on the boat

It's probably a 1.81 and if this is true and your rpm is around 3000-3200 rpm at 33-34 mph your doing very well with low slip numbers. If slip is correct and if the motor could turn up to 4800 rpm, the boat would be doing 50 mph,

Need clear info of what is happening, tach, speed. If slip numbers don't add up with accurate info we can look further into the drive ratio

What is the motor serial number?
Checking compression will tell us the motor health. Could get a loaner compression gauge from the local auto store. It is done by disconnecting power to the coil, open the carb to WOT and crank the motor over at least 4 times per cylinder

I will check the compression later this evening if I get a chance. I have a gauge already. I assume slip refers to slippage in the prop? Forgive me I'm very familiar with automotive terms and mechanics but not too much with boats. I could do anything to the engine but the rest is like Chinese to me. Lol

Yes, slip is how much the prop slips in the water. Exp: A 19 pitch prop moves 19 inches thru the water with every revolution. The amount less the then 19 inches is the slip

Forgot to update this. Checked compression, wasn't perfect but they were all close. So I checked the ignition timing and it was set at 8 degrees after tdc. So I set it at 8 before tdc and had to adjust the idle back down. I will be taking it out this weekend to see the difference
