Low top speed?

I took out my recently acquired Bayliner Capri 1991 w/ 1988 Mercury 100. Motor tested well with compression, all around 135 lbs. I took the boat out to a nearby river to test. It ran well overall but would only give me 35.5 mph w just me, my 100 lb wife and a well stocked cooler. This is a very light hull that supposedly tested at 34 mph w the stock 50 hp Force engine. Any ideas on why I may be suffering on the top end? I didn't rebuild carbs because it ran well at home. The engine did sit for 3 yrs before I bought it from a friend. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Low top speed?

Some possibles include:wet/waterlogged foam giving extra weight, prop not right(damaged, bent,or wrong size)fuel issue from sitting 3yrs(a carb overhaul and fuel pump rebuild are in order),electrical/spark issue causing 1 or more cylinders to not fire.Just a few of the possibles for you. When the engine sits that long, you have things that need done, regardless of how it runs.Search "waking up an outboard"and get things up to par, before trying to diagnose"problems".good luck
