Low speed rough/ loading up question

Hello all. '92 70 hp Force 3cyl w/ single carb. Heres my problem, engine runs fine mid and high speed. But in the no wake zones and around the ramp she runs rough and is a bit shaky. No excess smoke seen. If I ride around a while looking at the boats docked (10-20 min) she seems to load up on me. Then when I throw the coals to her to get outta there, she shakes for a few seconds as if shes loaded up and eventually smooths out and the boat planes up. I measured the oil mixture accurately, 16oz to 6 gal. Took carb apart, including all jets and blew passagways out, even pulled the welch plug. Carb was and is clean as a whistle, even before I started. get home and pull the plugs, #1 is wet black fouled, #2 is as it should be, and #3 is a little worse than 1. BTW, using surface gap plugs, NGK. Compression is 1-115, 2-115, 3-110. I can see oil loaded up inside the cylinder with flashlight. All bolts on the powerhead are still painted tight, no signs of being worked on. Any ideas out there? I know everyone is busy with their own boats, but.....

Re: Low speed rough/ loading up question

On the sides of your engine, do you have hoses that come from one L fitting and go to another? Do you have a hose on the bottom of the intake manifold?

If you do, you need to pull the hoses off and spray Deep Creep in the orfices. This comprises the oil scavange system of the motor and sucks up excess oil and returns it to the crankcase for burning. It sounds like yours may have carboned up and that is what is causing the loading up at low rpm.

Re: Low speed rough/ loading up question

Great info John. I looked them over and took out the one that was accessable and there is a one way ball check in there. But in the bottom one I had to use vacuum to get out the oil and some grit out and shot some brakecleen in there and worked it some. The one way action is working there to. So a ride will have to confirm if this did anything. Thanks again for the info.
If this doesnt work, are there regular tipped spark plugs available for these engines? 92 70hp Force 3cyl, single carb. Thanks!

There are regular tip spark plugs available but they give poorer performance at normal operating speeds. Most of us use surface gap plugs without any problems. You need to correct the root problem that is causing the loading up rather than treating the symtom.

Deep Creep is better than brakeclean as it breaks up carbon. Spray Deep Creep in each of the orfices and let it sit during the work week or when you wont be using the boat. That will give the orfices and passages a good clean out.

Deep Creep can be found at Advance Auto and Pep Boys auto stores.

Re: Low speed rough/ loading up question

Well I did notice an improvement in the low speed operation. Seems like you pointed me in the right direction. I will keep my eye on those small valve type fittings. After work I am going to pull the plugs and let you know how they look. Thanks again.

Re: Low speed rough/ loading up question

Sure thing Cap.

BTW I keep my lower carb set at about 1/8 turn than the other two. This is because the lower tends to foul easier.

Single carb on mine, ya think it would be easier to figure out, hmm....... I will get it though, sooner or later.
