About to start on clean/rebuild of carb on my '75 johnson 50hp. When ordering the kit, should I also order new needles and seats, or do these rarely need replacement. Also, my manual states that when you remove the silencer from the carbs there are single use screws that need to be replaced. Do they have a name? How do I order them.

Thanks

...and another thing, how do you check the compression? I assume there is some sort of guage to purchase?

You will get the new needle and seats with the carb kits. As for the screws...just reuse them.

I have never heard of the single use screw.

As for compression..you can go to a Napa or Can tire of something of that nature and purchase a compression guage.

TMD

Re: low speed needles

:D My 2 cents here, and I hope I don't step on any toes, but I just asked a similar question concerning the "needles" and "seats" for my carb re-build. Some kits don't include them. OEM apparantly does, Sierra doesn't include them from what I was told. You might want to check the kit when you get it to be sure.

Also, I referred to the "needles" and thought I might need new ones in the same discussion, and I misunderstood the reply. I thought I might also need the slow speed idle adjustment "needle" and "seats". Something entirely different than what is in the carb itself, but I failed to make the distinction. I don't have a clue if yours even has those needl adjustments, but thought it was worth the post anyway, just in case.

This forum has been VERY helpful and understanding and I appreciate all the help, just thought I would pass my confusion along :D

The needle and seats I was refering to are for the inlet of fuel to the float bowl.

TMD
