Low speed idle setting and carb adjustments

Hello, finally taking my '64 40HP Evinrude BIG TWIN up to CT from NJ this weekend, to test it on the water, thanks to the help from you folks in getting it going again.

I have rebuilt the carb...completely dissasembled, and let it soak a day.

Still, though, I'm not able to get it to idle as smooth and slow as I'd like, and it doesn't stay running at low enough idle, to switch from F to N (hadn't before either).

The one improvement, is that now when the throttle is hit, the hoelshot is there now, not 15 seconds later (at least, as far as testing in the barrel).

I've read the manual and iboats FAQ's about idle adjustment for the low speed needle...but now, it seems to have little to no effect at all.

Before, when I turned the needle clockwise and leaned things out, the engine idled higher and smoother...Now, I can basically turn it all the way in, and it doesn't lean it out nearly as much, thus making it difficult if not impossible to set low speed idle.

As far as adjusting idle, as I understand it, I'm to start w/ the needle backed out 1.5 turns. Running the warmed up engine, turn the needle in (clockwise) leaning it out, a 1/8 intervals, till it spits...then back it out a 1/4 turn to richen it...does that sound right? I was able to before, but can't now.

The float was definately previously out of adjustment, and now the needle seats and blocks off fuel delivery once the primer bulb hardens up (no more spilling gas through the carb like before).

I suppose, w/ the high speed jet fixed (and this being where I spend 95% of the time running) that for now the low speed debugging remains non-critical. I did remove all the old caked grease from the armature plate, and install fresh lube to help it swivel, but nevertheless still can't get it toi idle well enough, low enough, to swivel back to allow the cam shift plate on the shift braket to flop into N (maybe another 1/8" of movement on the armature, and I'd be able to get into N from F).

Thanks for any help, happy boating this weekend.

Check to be sure the throttle plate is all the way closed when the control is all the way back. If the throttle plate is open a little, it'll mess up the needle adjustment.
