low rpms

I have a 1985 searay seville with a 3.0 liter engine. My rpms are really low under load. I am talking like 2100 and speed at 10 mph. What would cause this? Setting in the yard with a hose hooked to it, it will run 4000 plus. I changed the out drive, would the wrong gear ratio cause this? I am not sure what the ratio is.

Thanks

was it healthy before the outdrive change? If it was, absolutely, the gear ratio change is going to have a MAJOR impact to it! Otherwise, if it was the same ratio, I'd say you have an unhealthy engine. Compression check time.

Re: low rpms

Did you spin the prop bushing or coupler????

(There are to places in the motor/drive that are contact fit, the coupler and the prop (pressed rubber)

Yes it was healthy before. I checked with the person I bought the outdrive from and it came from a boat with a 5.0. So, I guess I really messed up this time. I am using the same SS prop that I used before. Looks like I am in the market for another outdrive.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Re: low rpms

Good luck. Hopefully you can sell the V8 drive easily.
btw I think you need a 1.98 drive for the 3.0.

You could buy an SEI lower here from iboats to get yourself going quick.
