Hoping one of you mechanics can help out here - I have '79 65 horse that won't put out under load. Starts fine, idles ok (maybe a slight miss), and under no-load condition revs up fine. But in the water the RPM's don't get up much at all - just bogs. Carbs look good, cleaned and reinstalled. Gas is fresh. Magnets and and coils under flywheel check good. Fishin's getting good and I'm stuck in the driveway.
Any ideas??

Re: low power suzuki

Howdy, turbodaze. Fuel pump, tank pickup, primer bulb. Most likely fuel pump. Also possible: linkage that advances timing with throttle.

Pump the primer bulb when it is bogging. If it picks right up it is definitely in the fuel system not getting enough fuel to the carbs.

Long shot: Not running on all cylinders. This is easy to miss under no load or at idle. Pull plug wires one at a time. If there is no effect, that cylinder is dead.
Swap ignition parts until the problem swaps.

Good luck.
JB

Re: low power suzuki

hey had a 93 dt25 with same exact symptoms. not sure if the two motors are comparable at all but my problem was a bad throttle position sensor. I tested it acording to mannual and it tested bad. replaced it and when I put it in the watter and gapped the throttle, almost through me out the back. good luck.

craig
Columbia SC

turbodaze,
I have an '87 DT 65 with the exact same problem. Revs with no problem in neutral but gas it in gear and it dies. I have not gotten into it yet but please let me know if you find the fix.
Thanks

Re: low power suzuki

Hi, I have a 1985 DT65 w/the same problem! Runs great for neutral warmup, almost dies under load...steady pumping on the primer bulb helps...
Also, if I choke it, it comes back to life for a minute, then bogs again.

Does the primer bulb helping mean the fuel pump is the problem? The previous owner disconnected the oil injection system. I read in some other posts that there was a low-oil-level sensor in the injection system that reduces the engine RPMs in dangerous conditions...does anyone know if this might be sending a false signal somewhere?

Thanks!

Re: low power suzuki

Well, the low power saga on my 65DT has a happy but expensive ending. The final fix was a new CDI. The shop I used also highly reccomended that the coil be replaced as well because of the possibility that a bum coil could take out the CDI. Not sure if that's true or not, but I bought a new coil as well. Expect to spend over $300 for both items. Quite a ripoff, but these are hard to find. Obviously, you're going to want to make sure you replace the plugs, and verify coil operation before going after the CDI.

Low fuel pressure problems are easier to identify - sqeeze the bulb, or run with the cowl off and spray fuel while it's booged down - if it revs up you know the problem is in the fuel system. (I've been told WD40 works well for this).

Many thanks for all the feedback - we'll see you on the river!
