Warning
2005 Merc 225 hp Opti. Oil insufficient from boat tank to engine reserve.
Older boat with new engine. Cleaned oil pick up screen. Placed bag over both hoses from engine and found some inflation of the plastic bag. Soaped the top of both caps in boat tank but no indication of leaks. Opened the vent on the engine and idle engine for 15 min. to placed about ½ inch of oil into the reserve tank so it is pumping oil but not enough to keep up with it running at 4000 rpm. How much pressure should the engine place in the boat tank? Could the boat tank O rings be a problem, and how can you check them out? Thanks for you time.

Re: Low Oil in Reserve

If the oil rings where a problem you would have oil leaking from them. The first thing I would do is to take a look at the check valve on the motor end of the pressure line. If this has failed it will not generate the required pressure in the tank. The next thing to try is to see if you have a leak in the oil line proper. It’s highly unlikely but it’s possible

I think the pressure should be @ 3psi if I remember correctly.

Make sure you are purging "ALL" the air out of the engine tank. Losten the cap on the engine tank and run the engine, then when oil leaks out of the lid, tighten it.

Thanks for the reply, this is a new engine with only 40 hours. The boat oil tank has "O" rings in the caps that I will replace. Then haul the rig to the dealer, over 50 mile r/t.
I actually removed the cap on the engine tank, so there was no doubt. Oil should have overflowed in 15 min. of idle at the dock, instead of just a fraction of an inch.

Re: Low Oil in Reserve

G,day, The system works by pressurising the lower oil tank and forcing the oil to the top tank. Run the motor for a few minutes and then loosen one of the caps on the lower tank, You should hear a hiss, If no hiss then the caps are not sealing on the lower tank or the hose is loose or kinked. also check that the hoses have been connected the right way round.
