Low oil alarm????

I have a 2000 Yamaha 150 HP V-Max. The first few times i started it this year the low oil alarm sounded for a short period of time. (just bought it, first time using it this year) Now it never sounds although the low oil light does come on the first few moments after the engine starts. Is the alarm supposed to be sounding every time i turn the key on or start the engine?????
