loud squeal from top of mercruiser

I have a 79 120 mercruiser...runs fine.except when run full out/then slowing to a troll there is a loud squeal(air) coming from top of motor,a couple seconds later it stops when engine is running slow. I've cleaned the arrestor(was dirty)but that hasn't solved the prob,...any idea?

Are you sure its air? sounds like a loose alternator belt to me. just a guess

I think you may be right flashback, the belt has about 1/2" in 3/4" play.....should there be any play?

Well I tighten her,has about1/4" now, must hav stretched it....will pic-up new one today.thx for help.

Well had boat out on Sunday, it's not the alternator belt.....its air,coming out somewere

Maybe the bearings in the alternator are failing, hence the loose belt.remove belt and try and move the pully around.<br />Cant for the life of me figure what air would come out but im real curious to find out!Has it got a leg? cracked exhause hose after riser? Just guessing.
