I have a mid 90s 75HP Merc. ITs runs great, but at idle it smokes so bad. I have to increase the idle in order to clean up the exhust. Is there an adjustment on the oil feed for this?

Re: Lots of smoke

ive got twin yamaha 250's and they smoke so bad at start up that it clears the dock but when they are warm they dont smoke at all
these are two strokes that need allot of oil so i wouldn't worry about the smoke if they are running good

it also makes a difference what brand of oil you use some of the low priced oil's smoke more than others

Re: Lots of smoke

try using a synthetic blend or full synthetic oil, it will definitely reduce smoke. I use full synthetic by pennzoil and smoke has definitely been reduced.

Re: Lots of smoke

My old motor I used to have, which was a 1962 75 Johnson did the same thing. I cleared the dock almost everytime I started it up. Some people gave me dirty looks, but hey, it's not my fault, the 2 strokes do that. No biggie :p
Mine stopped smoking after it warmed up.
It's all good :D

Get a four-stroke and your smokin' days will be over.

DonC, is the smoking condition you have at idle just on cold starts?

I have a 72 evinrude 125, I use exxon superflo tcw-3 i get it from autozone since its real close to me and anywhere else like walmart i would have to drive a great distance. Anyways it smokes alittle when i first start it not enough to clear a dock though! After it warms up no smoke above idle and just faint traces of smoke during prolong idling.

Re: Lots of smoke

I don't want to get into a oil debate but I've found pennzoil synth blend to be great for my motor to cut out the smoke. When I first got my boat I used quaker state marine oil and the smoke killed every mosquitoe within 200 yards. When I changed to pennzoil synth blend there is very little smoke at start up as well as any other time the motors running. And I have a 23 y.o. 85 hp Rude.

Dutch

I know 2 strokes are supposed to smoke some and mine does. The lube is where it should be- in the motor and not in the atmosphere. It works for me
and that's all that matters.

Dutch

Re: Lots of smoke

You didn't say what year you had but in my book that goes to 1993 for a 75 hp. it does give a adjustment for the oil pump. Mine is a 1994 and its the same as the 93 except for the top of the oil tank. I can tell you the adjustment if you want it.

Re: Lots of smoke

Hey Dutch, you said quaker state kills misquitos for up to 200 yards...hmmm, you got me thinking now. :D

Re: Lots of smoke

Well maybe not 200 yards!! :D But it was bad enough to make you smell like outboard exhaust all day. It looked like I REALLY wanted to make sure I had PLENTY of oil in the gas. So I switched brands and the bugs are happy.

Dutch
