lost steering

hi there I took the boat for a ride today is a mercruiser 22 1978 and I was going slow on a not wake zone and I notice that I lost steering, I anchor and put the outdrive up and try to turn the steering wheel to left or right and nothing the outdrive is not moving, the power steering is assisted I have a rack in the back of the motor and a thick cable from the wheel to the back of the motor any advices thanks

Time to start troubleshooting and find out what's not turning. Disconnect the steering cable at the stern - does the cable go in and out when you turn the steering wheel? If not, the problem is in the helm.

EDIT - After re-reading your post it sounds like it is jammed. (I thought at first reading that your steering wheel turned, but nothing happened when you turned the whee). Either way, the troubleshooting is the same - start disconnecting and see what is stuck. You might want to disconnect the cable from the tiller arm at the transom and see if the outdrive will turn easily by hand.

hi there ok the steering wheel turn to let and right with not problem but the outdrive doesnt move and even the small piece in the back of the motor that look like a rack and pinion doesnt move.

Was the steering wheel hard to turn before it suddenly stopped moving the drive?

It sounds like you need a New Helm,+ Cable......

hi there no the steering wheel never was hard was turning normal and suddenly I lost steering the outdrive doesnt move
