I have a 1992 bayliner with a 3.0 liter alpha 1 2nd gen and my issue today was i lost power when i was out there fishing i mean just went from speed to cruise then when i would give it throttle it didn't go any faster! it felt like it was stuck in first gear, even with that i never heated up but what can cause this problem? i know there a switch that turns of the gas for a slight second to make the boat shift and i would like to know if that can be the issue! again i have no power and i fight with the boat to leave on idle it goes off, previous the boat was a turn key dream just turn key and it idle like a baby ! any help would be appreciated...

Re: Lost speed power

how new are the fuel/water filters? There may be water in them. i would change them out and see what happens.

No, it is not your shift interupt switch.....

I would start with changing the fuel/water separater as suggested above.....
It looks like an oil filter & is located near the fuel pump....
It is not standard equipment on the 3.0, so you may not have one......
I would suggest that you install one......
You most likely need to drain your fuel tank, but....
Temporarily hook up a separate fuel tank, (2-6 gal.) with fresh gas & see if it cures your problem.......;)
Welcome to iboats, btw.....:)

Re: Lost speed power

When you say you pushed the accelerator but didn't go any faster. Do you mean the engine reved up but the boat speed did not change? Or when you pushed the accelerator the engine speed did not change?

It could be a slipping prop or drive shaft/coupling if the engine speed changes but not the boat speed. If the engine speed doesn't change then the above suggestions are a good starting point.

Good point Gary, it could be what you say....
It can be difficult to decipher some posted problems.....

So, the question now is: engine revs just fine & you don't go anywhere, or the engine stumbles & runs poorly?.......:)

Re: Lost speed power

It sounds like it's missing on at least one cylinder. I'd start with checking the spark plugs for one that's a different color (while you're at it, replace them all).

Pull all the plugs & Spin the engine to see if you got any water in there....
How old is the manifold/riser?......

Re: Lost speed power

As mentioned earlier, from your description it sounds like not all the cylinders are firing. As suggested, remove all the spark plugs and check/replace them, and whilst they are out, spin the engine over with the starter motor to make sure no water is in any cylinders.
The poor running could also be caused by a spark plug lead not being correctly pushed onto the spark plug (bad connection). A compression test would also be a good idea just to make sure it's not a problem with one cylinder.

Revs increase, but speed doesn't = spun hub or coupler.

However, it is unrelated to his rough idle though.

Multiple problems, welcome to boating.

Re: Lost speed power

Hello Again after changing Water/ gas seperator changing fuel filter, changing the gas filter in the carb retiming the motor, changing of spark plugs, i even ran gas from a external gas tank i still get the rough idle! now can it be that my carb is just screwed up? well i ordered a new carb rochester 2 bbl and i am waiting on it's arrival i am just wondering since eveything else has been changed i guess this is the last thing in the fuel system that needs changing! any thoughts let em ride.......

What did the old plugs look like?
Did you do the compression test?

Re: Lost speed power

plugs did not look that bad a bit carbonized but that's all! no compression test but will the compression give me rough idle?
