I just bought a 1990 Skeeter 175. I am at my wits end to figure out how to not have the live wells fill up.
Unless I am fishing a tournament, I release everything I catch. At these times I do not want to haul around livewells full of water.
The boat has a lever switch down by the your right leg in the operators seat. It shows a square box that is empty in one lever position. The other lever positon shows a box that is full.
I have been told that the empty position will allow the wells to drain upon taking the boat out of the water. The other is the converse.
My question is how do I keep the wells from filling up upon entry into the water.
Give me some help.

Re: Lost on a live well problem

Mike,

First of all welcome to the board. You will find lots of helpful info here.

Although many boat manufacturers provide different livewell features, the concept remains the same. A supply line fills the livewell and a drain line empties the livewell.

The lever you are explaining is probably a ball valve for either the supply or drain. Usually these are set up to cut off water when the lever is 90 degrees to the water supply line and enable water to pass through when pointing the same direction as the supply line.

Regardless of the icons you described, I would start by making sure that valve handle is positioned at 90 degrees. If your well doesn't fill this is the supply line and will keep water from filling the well. If the well fills with the valve handle at 90 degrees then this valve is actually the drain and should only be positioned at 90 degrees when you want to hold water.

Finally, some boats have drains positioned very close to the water line which may cause water to come in when the boat is weighted down or if the flutter ( a little rubber flap that holds water from entering ) needs to be replaced.

Kevin

My tanks drain from the bottom to below water line at rest. They will fill through the drain up to water level. Just stick a small drain plug in the drain and it can't fill.

I have a 1990 200DX Skeeter and the switch by your leg is the shut off valve to the live well. Turn the valve to the filled in/full position to keep water from coming in to the well. This position is also for keeping water in the live well but you have to turn on the live well pump. The empty position allows water to come in from the lake (setting static) and will drain out when running on plane down the lake or when you take the boat out of the water. If water comes in with the valve closed, you have a bad valve, I just had to change one last week. Good luck with your Skeeter, I've really enjoyed mine.
