Ok... so I'm an idiot! I've somehow managed to LOSE my boat keys. A locksmith wants $100 to come out and make me a new one, so my question is.. can I order a replacement directly from Bayliner? This is a 1988 Capri.

Thanks

Greg
Re: LOST KEYS !! Can I order replacements from Bayliner?
i work at ford dealership and if the customer has the registion papers or vin nubmer they can replace the keys i dont know if boat dealers do the same thing but it worth a shot
Re: LOST KEYS !! Can I order replacements from Bayliner?
If Bayliner can't come up with a key, maybe they can supply the cut code for a L'smith to use to make one.

Failing that, many locks have a code imprinted on them that a smith can use to make a new key. Get a bid first.

Failing that, take the switch out of the boat and take it to a smith (get a bid first).

A new switch, complete with keys, may be less bux than new keys for the switch you have now.

Good luck.
JB
Re: LOST KEYS !! Can I order replacements from Bayliner?
Gcasper,
What type of controls is it rigged with? If it is merc you may be able to go to any boat dealer and pick up a key.

I know all of our new boats at the dealership use a total of 4 different keys. At least all of the Merc rigged ones anyway.

Hope this helps,
Hitman
Re: LOST KEYS !! Can I order replacements from Bayliner?
Hitman... by controls, do you mean the throttle control? I know that is an aftermarket control, not a MERC or OMC. But why would that affect the ignition key? And is there a number somewhere on the ignition that I can use to get a duplicate key from a dealer?

Thanks
Re: LOST KEYS !! Can I order replacements from Bayliner?
Casper,
There is not normally a code on the igintion. e-mail me at michael.hittle@langley.af.mil and I will explain. I would rather not post what I need to tell you here. Sorry guys but some of this I should not post.

As for your question krosemond not really. As I said for the boats that we have at my dealership that are pre-rigged there are only four different keys. Other rigs MAY be different. I will leave it at that.

Hitman
Re: LOST KEYS !! Can I order replacements from Bayliner?
I have an old mercury from 1970. When I bought it used I got one key. The key looked like desk and cabinet keys from work. Anyway I found some that were no longer being used and they fit and worked fine. Maybe that is why mercs use just 4 different keys. I never thought the key was much of a theft deterent for boats anyway. Just thought it might be worth a look in an old key collection.
Bill
