I haven't gone fishing in a long time and when I walk into Walmart and Dicks I am blown away by the selection of poles they have. I can understand that you might use different poles for different situations/fish. I live near Lake Ontario, have the Erie Canal in my back yard and the fingers lakes are a stone throw away. Salmon is my favorite fish to eat and I hear that there are many in Lake Ontario. I am looking for a pole or two for Salmon and other fish. Suggestion on Lures? I own a 19ft Cuddy isn't built for fishing, but it should serve me well.

Thanks in advance,

Get a $40-$80 daiwa spinning combo for casting, trolling and a 10'+ salmon/steelhead rod (medium) with a Daiwa line counter reel with a clicker ($120-$150) 10# flourocarbon on the spinning, and Stren Super Braid (20# test) on the clicker. Use your leftover flourocarbon as a leader.

Buy a few Big Jon diver disks and some rapala originals in black/silver, blue/silver, and a Live Target smelt about 4-5". Also get some spoons like Michigan Stingers or the like with brass and copper backs with green, clown, wonder bread, and watermelon. Also get a couple of rod holders that will run your poles out to the side of the boat.

That should get you started.
