i was going to meet the wife after she got off work for a picnic and fireworks,so i left real early to do a little fishing well after about an hr a terrible thunderstorm came up and it started raining buckets,i made it over to deep rock bank and was trying to avoid the lighting, then i said what the heck im here so i picked up a big jig and flipped it out there while i was sitting on the deck it was till lighting but i just couldnt stand not having my line in the water when al of sudden i poped it off a rock and bam there was a fish i have heartly set the hook and my 7-6 rod bowed all the way up i jumped up and started fighting the thing and up it came it was a monster smallie it cleared the water and about sh#t on myself,it was way over 7lbs it was almost twice the size of a football,it came back up a little way way from the boat and out came my jig:'(but just getting to see it made me feel like i havent in a long time.
by the way i changed my line from a flurocarbon to a mono so i could fish at night its amazing how much you notice the stretch of mono after fishinf flurocarbon.
and the wife finally caught some fish slow rolling a spinnerbait around 12 that was just as enjoyable as seeing the big smally.

Awwwww, Ron. That really sux. :'(

I don't think any fresh water fish fights as hard as a smallie.

Well, getting your rod bent is a lot better than getting skunked.

I won't touch mono after using spectra braid for a while (Power Pro). Your experience is the main reason.

Good thing you wasn't in a tournament. You'd be mad at yourself for weeks. I got an 18" smallie while prefishing a couple of weeks ago. I thought I got a striper until he got close enough for me to see the dark body. Darn thing put a trebble hook in my thumb too.:$

+2 about Mono! I can't go back to that rubber-band stuff. On the other hand, my wife loves it but then she only knows if she has a fish on, not if she had a bite!

After tomarrow night its coming off,im thinking about putting some of that fireline in the flourescent green on a couple of poles for night fishing.and the rest are going back to flurocarbon and powerpro unless i like the fireline better.

Re: Lost a lunker.

Ron G. Funny thing happened to me yesterday. I had the biggest LM of my life on. I have caught many , many fish over 6 pounds in my life , but this fish was a true monster. She took a tube in deep water about 20 feet. Very subtle bite and a poor hookset by your truly. She screamed out some line then my heart stopped when I saw the line coming up and knew she was going to break water:%. When she came out of the water I knew this would be the first bass that would go home in the boat in quite a few years. Wall Hanger. I managed to keep her hooked up during the jump but on her next head shake in the water my tube flew back at me:'(. I estimate the fish at 8 pounds at least, which is a fish of a lifetime around here.

Any way getting back to the line. Do yourself a favor and use power Pro,save some $$ and skip all the other stuff . If I hadn't had braid on , I would never had felt that fish and she would've spit the bait before I ever knew she was there. Power pro makes a high vis yellow colored line that is great for working jigs, tubes, most all finesse baits. You can really read whats happening just by watching the line. I always tie on about a 30 inch leader of at least 15 pound fluorocarbon, thats the only way to hook up with big fish that been hooked before. The seaguar knot works fabulous for floro to braid applications.
