loss of power

had a fun day at the lake until the rope i was using to tow a tube got sucked up into my impeller grate and wrapped around the impeller shaft. i was able to get my 96 bayliner jazz pulled back to the ramp and was able to get under it and pull what appeared to be all of the tangled rope out. ive had the boat out twice since then and it doesnt seem to have the same accelaration and it takes alot longer to plane out. any suggestions on what could cause a sudden loss of power like this?

Re: loss of power

take a flashlight and look at the impeller. your rope may have damaged it.

if it has dents and spots, it's worn out. If it's ok, look for the wear ring around the impeller. This ring should be nice and smooth with very little space between the impeller and ring ( .015"-.030" )

Re: loss of power

I'd try to make sure the shaft isn't bent as well. I had a friend suck up a ski rope in my ski a few years ago which would so tight that it fused some of the nylon rope together! However, it did no damage after cutting the rope out.

Re: loss of power

thanks for the advise i did have a chance to look at the impeller and from what i could see it didnt look damaged but i really didnt look too hard at the wear ring. when i pulled the rope out it was only wrapped around the shaft from what i could see and i dont feel any vibrations when ive used it since then. could there be anythind affected between the impeller and the stator?
