Loss of power

Hi all,
I have an old 63-64 Mercury 1000, 100 HP engine. It's been running great all year, until the other day when I was pulling the kids on the tube. It started fine but kept losing power until I finally took my kid back to shore. I wanted to run the boat with no load to see if I could see any difference. Again I started fine but as I was running, I heard a pop and lost all power in the motor. It will still start and idle, but it won't go much faster than idle, if I try to throttle up, it just stalls out. Could this be a fuel pump problem? If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance,
Jefflos

Re: Loss of power

That sure sounds like a fuel delivery problem you may have lost a fuel pump or have dirty carb or both

Re: Loss of power

Just remember it takes three things for an engine to run.
1-Spark
2-Fuel
3-Compression
Check the spark with a air gap spark tester, Check the spark plugs:if they all look similar that is probably a good thing. Check the fuel system start with fuel filters. The compression is the easiest thing to check and its a pretty clean job. Mark the plug wires and take out all the spark plugs. Check the compression on all cylinders it should be over a 100 lbs and all pretty close to one another. Lastly check out the carbs and clean em easy job. I hope this helps.
