Loss of Power

My 200 Mercury 200 EFI started fine but lost power shortly after running at high speed. I noticed the temp gauge was not reading and loss of power. When the motor was shut down the battery would not turn it over anymore. I found the battery was completly dead. What could have happened to cause this problem. Would a bad battery cause the loss of power? The battery will not take a charge anymore. MIKIEDS53@AOL.COM

Re: Loss of Power

The efi motors require full battery voltage to operate the efi system. We had a 150 do exactly what you described earlier this year. Obviously the battery went dead for a reason so you will need to get to the bottom of that but this may very well correct you power loss problem.

Re: Loss of Power

Thanks for the information. Could the rectifier that charges the battery gone bad. Would this cause the water temp gauge to not read. I will have to buy a new battery. It is completly dead.

Re: Loss of Power

The rectifiers are the most common thing that goes wrong with the Merc charging systems and fortunately they are not expensive either. If the electrical voltage was very low it might have effected the temperature gauge reading also. I would get the motor running properly (ie. replace the battery and fix the charging system if necessary) then see what the temp gauge does.

Re: Loss of Power

I have replaced my battery. That did not help my problem. It is now in the repair shop. They said the rectifiers are fine. The power-pack is good. They can't find the problem. They are going to call Mercury for some answers today. Does anyone have some ideas that can help. Thanks, Mike

Re: Loss of Power

sounds like you have the same type of mechanics there like we have here. They were going to call Merc on Dec 6 and it is now January 15 and still no answers. I would go immediatly to another shop that is willing to actually WORK on the thing. Sorry i am so bitter but everybody around here in SC wants to get paid....but do nothing!
