A friend just bought a used boat with a 07 Optimax 200 standard gear case only 160hrs. on it he changed the gear oil it was about half full. Filled up ran it about an hour the next day he noticed a small amount of gear oil below the water intakes on the nose cone drained the oil out was haft the amount he put in it. Pressure tested maintained 18 psi. for 30minutes. Anybody got a clue?

How did he know it was half filled? Did he measure it or something?

I've been told a vacuum test is better. Sounds strange.

They do not run for very long with half the oil in them.----Describe how you refilled the gear case.

Hi. So how much came out it and how much did he put in it ? Did he let it drain completely?
Was there water in it ? I’d suspect of you had a compromised gear case…water would find its way in…as quick or quicker than oil would find its way out.
I also suspect that it’s worth checking if that oil you see on the lower unit, is actually gear oil…and not 2 stroke oil from exhaust or somewhere else.
