Hi Don! While going through the threads for ideas I came across a post from you that states "Loose the coupler and you loose the raw water pump in the drive". My coupler burned out last year. When I replaced it over the winter I have not touched the water pump. Should I rebuild this also? It's a Mercruiser 120 1984.

Well, I know the answer, but since I am not Don S. I guess I will have to keep it to myself....

impeller's need to be changed every couple of year regardless. bought a motor (outboard) the other day. asked him how long since it's been changed and he said never. I asked him how long has he owned it he said 13 years. I will be changed.

The reason you lose the water pump when you lose the coupler is because with the coupler stripped, the outdrive stops turning. When the outdrive stops turning, the pump stops pumping. It doesn't damage the pump, it just doesn't work.

Having said that... if it has been awhile since the impeller has been changed, then yes, it needs to be changed too.
