I am doing various repairs and what not to my motor. It runs perfect other than the screamer alarm going off at high rpm's. I am changing the water pump components, as the seals looked to be blown.

I found out what the tan wire was for, thank you all for your help.

This is a great website for a wealth of information!!!!!

Re: loose tan wire, got it (lots of pics)

it looks like an overheat warning sensor. there is one on my engine and when performing some cks one day i was using a test light and (for the heck of it) i ck'd it for power and my warning buzzer would go off each time i touched the connection. it could be bad if someone unpluged it i would locate the other end of the plug and plug it in. you could run an ohm ck on the sensor with a dvm or a connection ck ( should be open)

That is my question, where does it plug in?

What is the empty plug just below the switchbox? Is that a tan wire too? If I knew the year and size of your motor, I may be able to look it up for you.

Re: loose tan wire, got it (lots of pics)

The tan wire in the port cylinder head is for a temperature guage. The black wire in the starboard head, that goes to a connector to a tan/blue wire, is the temperature switch for the overheat alarm (screamer).

There should be a tan wire that comes out of the harness connector to plug into. You'll find 4 wires exiting the bottom of the connector (control box end), 2 are for the trim relays, 1 is for the trim position sender and the other is for the temp guage. The connector I'm refering to is in the bottom right of your bottom picture.

Chris...........

Yep, chris is correct... That wire should go directly to a temp guage... If you don't have one, tape off the end and don't worry about it... But if you buy one, all you have to do is connect it to the lead going to the guage...

It looks like you have a V6, correct????

Take another picture of the area above the switchbox (shown in your last pic) Above that you will find a rectifier and a terminal block even futher up... At the terminal block you will see the overheat sensor lead attached to it, which comes from below the #1 cylinder. The overheat sensor is what may be causing your constant alarm...Meaning that your motor is running too hot!!!!! Don't drive through it until you find out what is wrong...

By the way, that "module" as you called it is a switchbox... There are actually two of them, one on top of the other, they are related to the ignition system..

Nice looking motor by the way...
We need the serial# and year to confirm all the wiring...

Can't pick the horsepower, but the single piece cylinder head makes it post 1987.

Chris..........

You guys are a wealth of information that I am not getting from staring at the manual.

The motor is a '91 Mercury V150, serial number: ODO29373
There is no temp guage so I am going to tape up the tan wire.

Here is a full view of the motor with the cover off as I am working on it.
mercury.jpg
Here is a shot of some loose wire connectors coming up from the power trim button.
loosewires.jpg

This is a picture above the switchbox.
mercurywire4.jpg

The tan and blue wire here is coming from a temp sensor on the starboard side head.
mercurywire5.jpg
This is on the port side of the motor, and has one of the tan/blue wires from the picture above running into it.
mercurywire6.jpg

My question is: in any of these pictures, do you see the temp sensor alarm that is tripping my screamer alarm...........?
You may have seen in my other post, I rebuilt the water pump today, and the gaskets were toast. The impeller looked fine, but there was lots of water that came out when I unbolted the jet pump. Lots of water in the cavity that the pump sits in as well. Could this stray water been enough to cause some overheating tripping the screamer alarm?
I am going to test it in the river tomorrow after work. Thanks for any info on where my temp alarm is coming from.

IT'S A JET!!! And the year is 1991......

The temperature switch is in the starboard head, all the long shots you've taken are from the port side.

I am pretty sure what the temp switch in the starboard head is, it looks just like the one I photo-ed from the port head.

KCLOST suggested that I change the thermostats if the water pump doesn't stop the alarm. Do you see that in any of the pics?

The thermostats are in the housing at the top of each cylinder head, with the hose on it.

Chris............

The forth picture in your last series, shows the terminal block... One of those tan wires (they all look tan with a blue stripe) should go to the Overheat sensor, on the starboard bank just under the top cylinder...

Worked with the settings in the camera. Some after photo software helps too.
