While removing one of the carbs on my motor for cleaning, the stud holding the carb to the motor screwed out from the body of the motor rather than the nut coming off the stud. I later got the nut off the stud by holding the stud (in the middle where there are no threads) with a vise grip. I want to now screw the stud back into the motor body. What is the proper way to do this?
Should I screw the stud in dry or use some Loctite on the threads of the stud before screwing it into the motor body? The Mercury shop manual seems to be silent on this particular fastener or perhaps I am just not looking at the correct page in my Mercury shop manual. I am inexperienced in the use of Loctite. If Loctite should be used:
1) What "number" Loctite is the right one to use? Loctite 271 or other?
2) Is a mere drop or two of Loctite on the threads sufficent or should one coat the entire thread of the stud before screwing it into the body of the motor?
3) Is there any risk of hydrolic lock if too much Loctite is applied to the threads or if it is applied incorrectly?
Thanks in advance for any tips/advice on this.
