Loose steering

I have a 1987 Grady White overnighter with a 1983 140 Evinrude. The wheel has 2 to 4 inches of play in it and I wanted to know how to correct this. The steering is by cable.

Do you have hydraulic steering as well? Could be a leaking cylinder.

What type of cable steering? There are 2 basic types a rotary or a rack and pinion.

There seems to be only one system for the steering. The boat is in another State now so I am unable to look at it but I would say it is a rotary type
