I have had a loose steering problem ever since I owned my "82 Imperial v182. I finally got the wife to move the lower unit side to side and watched everything inside. As it turned out, it was nothing but the large nut that holds the steering cable to the tube at the outdrive! Tightened it up and NO MORE SLACK! Wow! I was expecting the tiller/gimbal area had a problem. I can't believe I waited so long to tear into it. Hope this helps someone else.
